Factory Bike Friday: Byrner’s Zook
a look at Michael Byrne's BTO Sports Suzuki
Factory Bike Friday: Michael Byrne’s BTO Suzuki RM-Z450
Story and photos by Shan Moore
Mechanic: David Wilson
Michael Byrne returned to the U.S. motocross scene in 2012 riding under the BTO Suzuki banner, riding the 450 class on a highly modified RM-Z450. The BTO boys are closely tied with Joe Gibbs racing, and rely on JGR to do their suspension work as well as their engines.
Byrne’s mechanic, David Wilson, says that Byrner is excellent at relating to the team what the bike is doing, which makes it that much easier to get a good setup when the team shows up at a new track.
In the suspension department, JGR-modified Showa Forks are fitted to RG3 clamps, which are set at a 21mm offset. Byrner runs his handle bar risers set in the “one up and one forward” position.
In the rear, Byrne runs a Fox rear shock that has been set up by JGR. Acc roding to Wilson, Byrne likes the way the Fox shock tracks coming off the turns and in the rough stuff.
In the engine department, JGR takes care of that, as well, including doing the cams, heads, cranks, and transmission. An FMF exhaust system, which has been built to JGR specs to match the engine, completes the package.
Byrne runs a Hinson clutch system.
As far as off-the-counter stuff that BTO uses, Byrne’s bike has Pro Taper Bars, Galfer over-sized front brake rotors for extra stopping power, and a Moto Tassinari air box.
Excel rims, with carbon fiber Dubya hubs and Talon sprockets can also be found, front and rear.
Other items include Leo Vince carbon fiber guards, VP fuel, Motorex lubricants and Engine Ice radiator additive.
Like the JGR team, BTO uses Pirelli tires.
