What Really Happened: Washougal
07.26.2011 // 9 Comments
What really happened at Washougal is that we learned both how much luck means in a sport like motocross, and to a degree that you really do make your own luck.
Honda’s Trey Canard is the definition of a competitor, and in a sport where it seems all of the racers at least go through a period of time of being “burnt out”, it seems like Canard has been motivated consistently throughout his career. Of course, it helps in this regard that he’s been hurt a fair bit, too.

Team Honda’s Trey Canard fractured his femur while testing for this 2011 AMA National season, which caused him to miss the first half of the series, but he’s back now. He returned to action in Millville and immediately set fastest time in qualifying and then ended up with a podium finish overall. We caught up with him after the race to get his take on the day.

Lucas Oil/AMA Pro Motocross Championship points leader Chad Reed was having a great day in Millville, Minnesota; having dominated the first moto from start to finish, he had just taken the lead from championship rival Ryan Villopoto in the second moto when disaster struck. In what was probably the scariest crash in the history of the sport, Chad Reed was flung about four stories in the air without his motorcycle, and he not only survived, but finished the race and held onto the points lead. We caught up with him after the race.
