He who shall be king? Yep, looks pretty likely at this point. Even if Chad Reed can get it together and pick up his pace, he's way back in points. Josh Grant's 2nd in points though, and after Texas it's clear he's got a couple of outside-the-top-20 finishes left in him, but to be honest, it's hard to imagine Alessi falling victim to the same fate. At this point, the season suddenly seems boring (at least in the 450 class) and Mike Alessi is in the driver's seat.

It was Trey Canard who led the first part of lap one, before falling and handing it over to Christophe Pourcel. That's about all the Frenchman needed to run away for an uncontested win as the pack sorted itself out behind them. There was a lot of great racing going on back there, with Brett Metcalfe, Tommy Searle, Blake Wharton and - early on - Justin Barcia pushing the pace hard. Barcia crashed fairly hard early in lap one, then Wharton fell over in a corner all the while Dungey was moving thru.

Geez, this guy is good. When he's out front with a clear track, like in moto one, he puts on a school that nobody can attend because they're too far back to see him. But don't let Dungey catch a whiff, because when he does he seems to be able to match the pace and reel him in later in the moto.

The kid's luck caught up with him this weekend, as he went down fairly hard on lap one of the first moto, and pretty much was mired mid-pack in moto two eventually pulling a DNF.

Ryan Dungey was awesome, coming from 8th or so in moto one and motoring right past most of the standard top-10 and pulling away. In moto 2, he was the man, and walked away easily with the overall win, retaining the points lead in the process.

As Dungey moved through the pack early in moto two, he dealt with Blake Wharton on the first lap. Wharton put in his best ride of the series by far, ending up a solid 3rd.

Tickle was solid again this weekend, coming off a 6th seven days ago in Hangtown. In Freestone, Broc nailed a 9th overall with 9-8 finishes.

Many had pegged Trey Canard as the man to beat. He clearly has, or is very near, the speed necessary to run the winner's pace, and being used to the Texas heat and all (since he's from Oklahoma), that just might make the difference. Well, it wasn't really all that hot this weekend, and a crash early while leading the first moto sure didn't help matters. However, Ice Trey still pulled off a podium finish via a 3-2.

It was Andrew Short and Mike Alessi side-by-side running into the first turn of moto one. Shorty was great, as was fellow Honda rider Dan Reardon, who just plain put the smack down on just about everyone except countryman Chad Reed and Mike Alessi in that 2nd moto. But Short was, once again, very consistent and solid going 2-3 for 2nd overall.

Why is it that there's always SOMEBODY that makes the premier motocross class boring up front? First it was Ricky, then it was Bubba, and now it appears it may well be Mike Alessi. Sure he's there because Villopoto's not, but hey - Villopoto's not - and what counts is that Alessi is, so more power to him. He smoked everyone at Freestone, there's just no two ways about it. Heading out east, Mikey's got a solid points lead, red backgrounds on his number plates, and a confidence that'll need a sledgehammer to the forehead to be broken. Let's hope someone can step up and give him a hard time.

Everyone was talking about Dan Reardon again this weekend, as the Australian supermodel turned motocross star put the hammer down to run 2nd for much of moto two. That was before his 450 class Australian nemesis Chad Reed made short work of him on his way to 2nd. Regardless, Reardon's way more competitive in the bigs than he ever was on a tiddler.

Well, it's safe to say that Kawasaki is happy with Ricky Dietrich. This kid's an off-road racer, folks, not a motocrosser, but regardless, he was one of the fastest guys on the track all day at Freestone. He held off Reed for quite a while in moto two, eventually going 7-6 for the day, an impressive debut for Tim Ferry's substitute.

Reed was good, and clearly charged hard for both motos. Unfortunately, he's so far behind at the start that he has virtually no chance of catching a start/sprinter like his teammate Mike Alessi. At this stage of the game, it must be asked if Reed ever will find his mojo and run up front consistently, but at the very least we get to watch a rider charging hard and racing his way through the pack for the duration of both motos.

Bummer for Matt Goerke, as a broken leg will prevent him from cracking the top-5 this summer. That's something he seemed sure to be headed for, but now we'll never know. Get well soon, Matt.

We don't talk much about PJ Larsen, and that's mainly because he's just always outside of the spot that normally gets talked about, and he's not a privateer so his results don't really blow you away. However he is solid, and his first moto 12th looked to be a decent start until a hard crash in moto two led to a 37th, which wasn't so good for the AMA Horizon Award co-winner last summer at Loretta's.

Not quite all of them, but these two guys were the cream of the crop at Freestone - Mike Alessi and Andrew Short.
