The first time's always the sweetest, and Ryan Villopoto will undoubtedly look back on the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross in Seattle's Qwest Field with fondness. He rode a solid and nearly mistake-free race that kept him up front when the checkers flew in his first race back from illness.

Villo, who's originally from the State of Washington, seemed well adapted and ready to do battle in his first race at Seattle since his championship winning 2007 West Lites season. This was Villopoto's first race back after being diagnosed with a virus that seemed to drain his energy and make him physically ill and that'd been hindering him for 3-4 rounds before he pulled out for New Orleans.

James Stewart was truly "dead last" going through the first turn... well, that's if you don't count Chad Reed and Tyler Bowers laying on the ground before the first turn. Regardless, JS7 jammed his way to the front, but was ultimately unable to bridge the 8 second gap that Villopoto had put on him by the final few laps. Regardless, James was able to make up the 3 points he was behind on Chad, and add 3 more. This of course puts him in the points lead and the driver's seat with 2 rounds remaining in the series.

Reed seemed to be struggling somewhat with the track all day. Whether this was due to simply not liking it, or the reported sickness he'd been suffering for a few weeks is up to you, but the end result was he lost 6 points to Stewart in one night. At this point it's truly do or die for Reedy, who seems very, very motivated to keep that #1 plate for next year.

Ivan was finally able to not only make it onto the podium, but onto the top step! Well, it was "just" his heat race, but still - it's been a loooong time since we've had a chance to hear Ivan recite the winner's schpeil. He rode well, staying ahead of Reed who'd fallen early on, and was so excited on the podium he was barely comprehensible. Nevertheless, great ride for Ivan and hopefully he'll keep it going.

Remember Ryan Dungey? The West Lites points leader - remember the West Lites class - has been on hiatus for 2 months, but it was back with a vengeance in Seattle, and Dungey was the cream of the crop. He out-classed the competition in the main event and had a nice gap at the line, gaining 7 more points on 2nd place Jake Weimer, who ended the night in 4th.

Millsaps seemed to meld with the track quite well, as he often does on rougher, less 'precise' surfaces and layouts. Davi ran in the top 3 the entire race, following Alessi and Villopoto early on before getting past the fallen Alessi. Had it not been for that big #7 San Manuel Yamaha going by on about lap 15, Millsaps would've ended up a solid 2nd. He settled for 3rd though, which is just as well because there was just no stopping the Stewart freight-train that was coming up behind him.

3rd place in the Lites West series (Ryan Morais) ended up 2nd on the night, which was two spots ahead of his teammate Jake Weimer, who is currently 2nd in the series. Morais had a heck of a time dealing with Trey Canard in the early stages of the race, before Canard lost his front end and went down, relegating him to 4th as Morais rallied for 2nd.

Another good ride was put in by Josh Grant, who was fast all day on the gnarly Seattle track. In reportedly only his 2nd time on the bike since a hard crash in Jacksonville 2 weeks ago, Grant kept his gear clean most of the night and stayed off the ground to end up 6th in the main event.

Canard looked really fast all night, but a couple of soil samples nearly kept him from landing on the podium this time around. Trey ended up 3rd, but was a definite threat to Morais in 2nd until a small bobble put him briefly on the ground.

Jake 'The Snake' Moss was impressive all day and night, and seemed like a potential podium candidate for sure. He only missed it by two spots, and the 4 guys ahead of him are the cream of the crop in the West, for sure. It was an excellent night for Moss, who'd already turned quite a few heads at the previous rounds. Hopefully he will have a good ride on a solid team lined up for the Nationals, which are quickly approaching.

Mitch Payton mentioned that both of his guys (Morais and Weimer) were faster now than they were before the break. Unfortunately for them, Dungey is too, and the whole front group seems to have stepped it up a notch during the break. Assuming they've been doing a ton of outdoor testing, it's no doubt at least partially due to increased fitness, although Morais revealed in a post-race interview that he'd been working on his early race sprint pace to help even him out with the rest of the front pack.

Sipes had the 2nd fastest practice time of the day, but once again failed to capitalize on his speed during the main event. While we're not sure exactly what happened to Ryan in the main, a look at the lap charts reveals he never made it to lap 12.

If you nevermind the fact that Reed went down briefly in his heat, Tedesco's ride to the win was an impressive one. He looked good and solid all day on the loose, rocky Seattle soil, but he managed only a 9th in the main event.

After Alessi took himself out of the running, RV2 and Millsaps made a solid run up front trying to keep a gap on Stewart. While he ultimately made it around Davi, James wasn't able to better the pace that Villopoto was putting down out front.

Stewart's ability to make up time everywhere on the track on even the best riders was made quite clear in Seattle. He just flows through the soft stuff and pins the throttle, consequences be damned. He was flopping around like a fish for much of his charge, but he didn't go down, and he made 6 points on Reed.
