5. Not a necessity BUT...Clean your bike after every ride! It helps it keep its value and it won't look like a POS as quick!

4. Clean air filter every 2 rides MAX. Your bike will run better if it can breathe better!

3. Change oil after 3 hard rides MAX. Like they say, it is cheap insurance!

2. ALWAYS properly warm up the bike. You wouldn't want to wake up and go out would you? You need some time to wake up and get ready! 8)

#1 TIP:
RIDE HARD, BE SAFE, HAVE FUN!

when operating a torque wrench know the torque range of IT. If it starts at 10, and you thought it started at 0 =10 extra torque. Like if you were to torque your oil filter bolts and it has 10 extra torque to it, it just might break the bolt off  . Now I don't know what kind of idiot would do this, cough, cough. But just don't do it, then you will have to order a new bolt. Also, if you notice your washer on the oil drain bolt flattening out like it has 100 pounds of torque on it, it might mean it has a little too much torque. Man, I hope this never happens to me......

-Always use gasoline the same week you bought it (don't buy more than you need)
-Pick one type of gas, one type of oil, one premix ratio and STICK with it
-Learn how to properly jet your bike
-Don't be under the impression that aftermarket 2 stroke pipes give you more horsepower
-The Boyesen RadValve is almost always better than the V Force
-Anytime you increase or decrease airflow in or out, change your jetting
-Don't cheap out on oil
-Don't cheap out on safety gear (ESPECIALLY your helmet and boots)
-Never eat a bowl of Chilli before a race (trust me)
-Use peanut butter to remove sticker residue
-Take care of your bike...wash it and change oils after every ride
-Warm up your bike until the top of the radiator is warm to the touch
-Have fun but be careful
-For the love of god DON'T try to make your bike look like a freestyler
-Don't be a goon

or if you need to stop fast grip your tank as hard as you can with your legs and give it all the front brake (practice first) and you can stop fast

remember the front brake is for stoping faster then the back not to be scared of

stand up when you jump if not everybody here will call you swamp a$$

always know your conditions, dont get out on a track and try to haul a$$ the first lap

learn to get your front end down while jumping brake taping is not the onyl method

if you are cheap dont buy a racing thumper :D

never go without your helmet and boots

NEVER expect to win your first race

a fast race is a good race a dnf is last place my dad repeated that to me like 100000 times and i have 10 races and 0 dnfs for any motos

ELBOWS UP the sooner you learn the better

DONT drink pop i used to do it all the time now i cant stand it

dont think you are the best because you can ride bmx it is like 80% differnt

holeshot is the best time to gain position practice all you can and make sure you can start in second gear

sandbaggers suck

dont buy a 250 two stroke if you are a begginer

and finally give it your all and you will get it back

hope you all enjoy i know i doubled some tips but hey i am bored

Better one yet buy a bike from someone who races hard and can afford a mechanic and you will get a better bike then you could ever get a never been raced one. Usually never been races means never really learned to ride, so do you think someone who never bothered to step it up and race would care like a racer does for his bike? Yeah I know most bikes that were raced are actually better because racers take pride in their bikes where a person that kind of just puts around everynow and then might not know all the maintenence they should be doing

one of the most important things you can do is make yourself the kind of rider people like. by that i mean don't talk crap about people, think of the opportunity to help someone like putting karma (yeah i know its hippie crap but its true) in an imaginary bank account. lend someone your spare gloves for a race, help that little kid on a 70 pick up his bike and get it started if he crashes it on a trail, then tell him what he did wrong and get on your bike and do it yourself, usually if u do that he will not be afraid to try again. be good humored if someone laughs at you putting the bike over backward on a near verticle hill, even if it frustrates you think about how funny it looked to them yell out "it looked cool though didn't it" or something like that they will be more likely to come help you pick up your bike. a good example the other day my uncle took me to some trails a friend of his owns. ther were a few people ther and i didn't know who owned the trails. while we were riding this little kid on a xr70 crashed in a creek i was riding a while behind him and when i crossed the creek a saw him with his front end stuck in the mud i stopped and helped him pull it out. while i was pulling it out of the creek a guy on a gasgas 125 stopped up on a ravine trail that overlooked the creek but ther was no way to get from ther to where we were. 5 minits later i managed to start his bike (he couldn't because it was flooded) and i took my helmet off and slowly crossed the creek beside him telling him what he should be doing then the guy on the gasgas (the kids dad) pulls up and asks the kid if he's all right he says yeah and his dad thanks me for helping. later back at the pickups the kid was rubbing his eye because he caught a tree branch in the eye because he left his goggles at the creek i toss him my spares and his dad rides up and says he couldn't find his gogs so i tell the kid he can keep my spares (they were wayyyy old anyway). later when i was loading my bike he came up to me and said thanks for all your help. then he told me the combination to the lock on the gates and said your welcome here whenever you like just don't bring more than one or two other people with you.

This is a great thread. Just bought a 93 Yam YZ250 the other day.

Just to stress: Always wear your pads. Learned that the hard way when my arm turned to ground beef.

Bring TOOLS. I had a crappy dirtbike that I would take to the track. Couple times I would land hard on the bars and they would go down like a bicycles. That really sucked. Nice having tools to fix it better.

If you don't have specific riding gear make sure you bring a change of clothes rather than wearing home the jeans you rode in. Nothing worse than riding home in your nice clean car with dirt and sweat infested clothes.

Don't be an ass to slower riders on a track or trail. I'm not the best and I hate it when people who know they are better than me wiz by me really close to prove a point. I'm just there to have fun, not race and be intimidated. Almost had one dude jump over top of me. No need for that.

I've ridden plenty of four stroke dirt (and street) bikes but only a couple of 2 strokes. Any specific advise for newby 2 stroke riders.

- Always lean forward and (gently) accelerate up the face of a jump. This ensures you don't lose momentum due to the angle of the jump and helps keep the front wheel up.
- Ride slowly the first lap. Many track owners change the track weekly, and finding a new set of whoops immediately after a blind landing is not a nice way to start the day.
- Never underestimate the speed of your bike, or the strength of the ground.
- When cleaning your bike, be sure to get underneath.
- Keep your fingers away from sprockets when lubing the chain.
- Check screws and bolts regularly, dirt bikes vibrate a lot, and stuff just falls off sometimes if you aren't careful.
- Energy drinks are the worst thing to drink in conjunction with MX. They serve to dehydrate rather than hydrate, and are even banned (due to fatalities) in several countries...don't believe the hype, stick with water or gatorade.
