downshift with clutch or without?

Hi,i'd like to know if you guys use the clutch when downshifting or not. If not do you think it's good for the bike or there's a possibility to damage the gearbox?

Re:downshift with clutch or without?

I always preferred to shift with the clutch. The performance difference that shifting without a clutch is minimal. Unless you want to replace your clutch a lot more often, it is probably just as good to use the clutch.

One note though, is that you can still hold the throttle open while up-shifting using the clutch. This seems to work just fine.

downshift with clutch or without?

It doesn't matter either way as long as you have the right RPM when your up shifting or down shifting and will infact save the clutch! Because every time you pull the clutch in it uses the clutch springs to seperate the disc and spacers in the clutch itself so alot of pro riders use the clutch when there coming out of a turn, they have to even on a 450f. Todays transmissions are almost bullet proof unlike todays stock clutchs from the factory

It is faster if u switch without the clutch. I have a kx250f 2006 I bought it brand new and i have always switched without the clutch. And my gearbox has held up. Nothing has ever happened to it. So as long as u find that rpm to switch at u should be ok.

downshift with clutch or without?

Up shifting with no clutch is fine as long as you get out of the gas for that split second. This has been done seamlessly on street bikes for years. Now if you are down shifting you really need to use the clutch. This is for many reasons. The main reason is because you are going down a gear because you are going slower. Which in turn means your gears have a load on them regardless if your are in the gas or not. So down shifting with no clutch is bad. You are more likely to blow a gear this way.

Re:downshift with clutch or without?

Well i guess it depends on the riding style of each rider. Some use the clutch and others don't. I also heard some professional opinions, such Rich Lafferty's, David Vulliemin's and David Knight's but they all have different opinions...the only similarity is that none of them uses the clutch for both, they only use it only for upshifting or only for downshifting...
