Whew, not very specific so we'll have to slowly narrow it down.
Does the engine kick over?
Do you have compression?

Hmmm, alrighty, this is very difficult over the internet.
First off, I am usually 100% for doing your own work on your bike, however this is in NO offense to you (we were all in the situation you were in once or another time in our lives) but bring it in to a repair shop and have them fix it.
Ask them to call you when they have found what the problem is, then post what the problem is, along with the year of the bike and we can establish if it's worth fixing or not, in most cases it is.

don't really know with the details you have given but maybe you could have sheared a pin or something on your stator. is it kicking you back when you kick it or when it does catch spark does it just backfire, maybe your coil is shot causing it not to fire, or get you a compression tester and see how much compression you have, i really don't know with the details you've given me but you can try them. also on my ktmsx250 i had my crank bearings go out and actually destroy my flywheel by shaking and beating my magnet to peices

it kind of backfires. could it be something simple like needing a new spark plug or something?

Bring it to the shop...
Trust me, that will be much easier.
Then, you can slowly start to work your way up with how-to's on bikes by doing all the maintainence, then changing a top-end, etc.

TInker with it yourself. Learn how 2 strokes work you CAN figure it out! When you kick the motor over (push on the kick start) does it feel like it resists alot and is hard to kick? Remove your spark plug, ground it too the head (dont hold it with your hand LOL) then turn the motor over somewhat quickly. It should spark it will be obvious when it sparks "). DO we have fresh fuel? Is the fuel turned on ? Do you know where your carberator is? If so remove it take the float bowl off and heck for any debris. If you have debris in your float bowl I canm almost gaurantee that something is stuck in a jet clogging it. Removes jets and spray them down with carb cleaner and blow it out with compresed air. Use safety goggles please carb cleaner in your eye doesnt feel good. Oh, and you said it backfired.. I assume this is an older bike, your reeds probly are worn and causing backfire. Inspect your reeds. It is the boot inbetween your cylinder(engine) and carberator. There should be four or 6 8 mm hex's I believe. Inspect for any cracks also. I would just reccomend replacing the reeds all together.

No offense, but I doesn't sound like you know to much about bikes. Personally when I got my first bike I had the shop do the maitenence and all that but it can be expensive. First, I would change the spark plug before anything. Then go down the list of what all the other guys were telling you.
