Hey, I need some help. I'm a complete noob to suspension in general. So, if someone could post a guide to setting sag (cough...Derek...cough) and maby some definitions as to what rebound, compression etc. mean (I have a general idea but not 100% sure on those that would be great. Peace.

Alrighty Brendan.

1. First measure your bike UNloaded (basically on your stand) from the rear fender bolt in a straight line down to the rear axle center.

Write this number down. (I.E.600 mm)

2. Sit on your bike as you would in a normal riding position and have 1 buddy hold the bike up and 1 buddy take this measurement.

Write this number down. (I.E. 550)

3.Standard race sag is about 100mm (10cm), subtract your 2nd measurement from your 1st measurement and adjust accordingly until it's 100mm.

4.This is just a broad termonology as suspension is alot more to it than just this but:
Compression:The amount of force on the down stroke or how stiff the downstroke is (think of it like a piston, the piston builds up compression on the up-stroke, same basic concept).

Rebound:Basically the stiffness or speed the rebound (or up-stroke) of the forks are. Faster the rebound the faster the forks will jolt back up.

Here is Derek's Tech Tip Archive which I found very helpful.

As well as Zenith's great read to understanding and working on all parts of the suspension.

That should get you heading in the right direction.

I didn't read the links that Moto944 posted, but one thing you should do when setting your race sag is put all of your gear on. Some say every little peice of gear you ride with, but when I set/check mine, I just put on my boots, helmet, tool pack, camel back & that's it.
