An 85 sounds about right. He won't feel left out either because to of his friends ride 85's.

yeah if he was looking at that rm85 it isnt a bad idea in fact i own the 2004 rm85 big wheel version but i am way too big for it that why i bought me a 125,but anyways hes 4 '11 he need a big wheel 85,a regualr wheel 85 would be a bit small for him the rm85L sound about right for him and i got mine for about 2,000 so it wont be a problem for him since his budget is 3,000.he can buy an 04 rm85L and have money for his gear and/or some modds for his bike.although he should worry about gear first and learn how to ride befoer modding his bike.i hope this helped a little.oh and it should be hard for him to work on the bike as long as he takes good care of it and keeps it clean he should be allright.and these bike have good power so no he wont be feeling left out at all plus as allready stated in an earlier post his friends ride 85's so hell be just fine and he will be very happy if he decides to go with the rm85L.again i hope this helps.

I was thinking the RM85L might be a little big for him, but if he's gunna buy new, might as well get something he can grow into, right? I'm a former owner of a 2002 RM85, and finally got rid of it for two reasons. 1.) Too big for it and 2.) It fell apart. The reason I later found out, was that the previous owner of it (i bought it used) never maintained it, (ex. put premix and gas in it, and oil and rode.) He did minimal matinence. All it had by the time I bought it was a Hinson clutch, wiseco top-end, acrebis handguards, renthal sprockets, and Michelin starcross tires. By the time I had sold it, it had a Factory effex graphics kit and seatcover, fmf shorty silencer, sunstar sprockets, renthal chain, stock top-end, and lived off of 115 octane gas. Enough about my bikes, He rode my xr100 today, and I could tell he's gunna be the next Ricky Carmichael lol. Not really, but he really likes the "thrill" of jumping. Maybe a RM85L is a good idea...

How about a RM85L compared to a YZ85?

yea hell be a bit small, not much though and he will grow into it,if you get him an 85 hell just grow out of it faster imo.the rm85L sounds like a good idea,so does the yz85 but im 5'11 i sat on it and it was way small than my brother who is 4'9 sat on it and he could allready touch with his tips.if this kid here is 4 '11 he will flat foot the bike,he should get an 85 big wheel.and ruff ryder, hed be better of getting and mx bike,1-there better,2-his friends ride mx bikes.

The crf150 is a good idea, but we're looking at something that will stick with him for a while... My fear is that he won't be comfortable enough on the 150.

Yea no dought i was jus thinkin if hes neva rode a 2-stroke maybe he'll do wat i did the first time and fly off the back. I just thought that the crf would be easy to ride um they are fast and pretty fun to ride but hey an kx 100 would be good to.

yea when i got my bike it was very jumpy to me and powerful but you get used to it.i personally think 4 strokes are sooooooo boring to ride after i rode an uncles crf230,i just hated it plus it had an electric start with no kickstart as back up,how shi**Y.itll take the kids sum getting used to but hell be ok as long as he takes it slow at first.

sure a 4 stroke will be easy to learn on but all his friends ride mx bikes,2 strokes also they will help him and guide him.plus itll be alotm ore fun when he wants the power and it wil be there for him unlike a 4 stroke or trail bike.

It all depends on the rider. oh and my friend lives down the street, so he can come over to practice on my track at any time. I'll show him the basics such as sit by the gas tank, brake later and gas it, ill teach him whoops, jumping, and DEFINETLY cornering. I'll teach him hill climbing, sand riding, mud bogging, trail riding, you name it, i'll teach him. And expect it to be done on a 85. A KX100 is too much "juice" for him.
