I just got a call from the shop, they got the rear brake caliper fixed, but the rear shock is blown out. I was planning on getting the fork seals replaced because thats $160 and a new front tire which is another like 40. Wouldve cost around 200 dollars, which I have. What I don't have is the $300 to rebuild the rear shock. The guy told me it was pretty dangerous to ride with it blown out. How dangerous is it?

You could get pitched over the bars.

Also, you'll damage other rear suspension components.

Pay now, or pay more later.

Ouch, I've done that on a bmx bike, theres no way I want to do that on a motorcycle. I'm thinking of selling it and putting money down on a new bike. I think I could get my parents to pay for it if I get good grades (as I'm not the highes achiever) I have put my lifes saving into this bike and it makes me mad that it still needs things like this. If it wasnt something so big I would probably pay for it. How much do you think its worth with a broken rear shock, needs fork seals, and the front tire is a little worn? Its looks very nice, new plastics, new bars, new sprockets and chain. It's in great running condition besides these problems.

$300 is a bit pricey for rebuilding a shock. You should be able to get it done much cheaper. Can you pull the shock off the bike your self?

I don't have many tools, so I doubt I could get the shock off, considering most of the subframe bolts are stripped anyways. I got it for 1000, so if I could get 1200 that would be good. It just sucks that I poured all my money into this bike just to have it still be broken. I talked a little bit with my mom and she said if I sell it then I can use whatever I have. I'd like to go newer than 2000 but if I only got 1000 bucks I couldnt. My parents won't let me get a job either. So I'm screwed either way. I have a stock 03 banshee that I could start modifying with the money I get from it, but I really want another dirt bike really bad, I was just starting to get comfortable on it. Thanks for all the quick feedback anyways. The place I get the work done is really the only local place besides a yamaha dealership too.

I was thinking about it, but then I won't be able to ride it for a couple of months. I don't have the 300 bucks to get it rebuilt. Then another 160 for the front fork seals. I already haven't ridden it in a couple of months. I can't take it anymore.

It always costs less to keep what you've got and fix it, rather than buy new. See if your parents can help you pay to get your bike fixed. If they're willing to make the payments on a new bike, they should be more willing to pitch in a little to get yours in working order, because it'll cost them less.

If they won't let you get a job, they don't expect you to pay for everything yourself.

iceman - I've got a rear shock that might fit your bike. Had a KX250 that was parted out and the only thing left is the rear shock. I'm not sure what year it was, but I'm guessing it was a 92.

My parents aren't going to pay for it. The quad is my dads. They arent going to buy me a new one, so I might just sell it and put the money into the banshee, I'm better at riding atvs anyways. Still sort of up in the air though. Do you know if that shock would fit? And how much would you want for it?

Would this work? Its from a 125, I asked him the last time it was serviced and if it needed any work done. I didnt know 125/250 parts were similiar.
