okay here's the problem
Little red riding hood left home for her grandmother's house at 8:30am driving 30mph on her cycle. Part way there, her cycle broke down and she walked home at 4mph. If she returned home at 10:30am, how far from home was she when her cycle broke down?
What formula would I use to solve it?
- rt=rt
- rt+rt=d
- rt -rt=d
- d/r=d/r
*r - rate
t - time
d- distance

Is that all it gives? It never gave the initial distance from Granny's to her house.
I mean, she could've pedalled 1 hour (30 miles) and walked the other hour (4 mph) and the house would be 34 miles away.
Or she could've rode her bike for 20 minutes (10 miles) and walked the rest of the 1 hr. 40 min. and it would've been 6.6667 miles, equaling a total distance of 16.6667 miles.
There should be more (or am I missing something), there are too many ratio's, heck she could've rode her bike for a minute, had it break down and walk the 1 hr. 59 minutes or it could've been vice-versa.

Okay, firstly you need to find the ratio of the two times so that the distance travelled (both on bicycle and on foot) are the same.
Okay, so first we must find the ratio of time.
Okay, so the overall time is 2 hours.
Using the formula d=st (distance equals speed multiplied by time) and introducing an unknown we get:
(2-X)x4=30X
Where:
(2-X)x4 is the time (2 hours subtract the unknown), multiplied by the speed (4mph)
and
30X is the time (X) multiplied by the speed (30mph)
Thus X= 4/17 (or 0.2352941176)
So (2-X)= 1 and 13/17
Okay, so now we want to find the distance travelled.
So, d=st (distance equals speed multiplied by time).
Now, the speed is 30mph and the time is 4/17hours (faster speed=less time to get there)
Thus d=30.(4/17) (where '.' is multiply)
d=7 and 1/17th miles (7.058823529 miles)
And to double check your answer, find the distance travelled by walking.
d= (1 and 13/17).4
d= 7 and 1/17th miles (7.058823529 miles)
So Little Red Riding Hood's bicycle broke down 7.06 miles from her house.
If you have trouble understanding anything, dont be shy to ask.
