Matty37- Very informational. You make me want to get out and run right now. I too find Cardio to be the most important aspect of my workout, and I also notice more gains when I run rather than bike. My scheduel was very limited before, so all I could do is workout, but now I am pretty much fee and I can work out and ride daily.
Halfstepdown88- Motocross pushups were desigend specifly for motocross by Gary Semics. It work your muslces in the almost the exact manor you would use them when riding. Basically get on to a bench press with a mounted bar. put your feet at the end of the bench and hand handlebar width apart on the bar. then do push ups letting your body come down to the bar @ the lower chest and at the same time letting your knees extend down past the seat. Keep your legs bent.

Hey guys,
If you are interested in different types of pushups, my training manual Motocross Fitness: The Ultimate Home Training Guide for Motocross Athletes - 2nd Edition, describes many different types that you can do to gain strength and endurance in the upper body. Many of them are done on unstable surfaces to mimic your movement on the bike. These are great for training the upper body without lifting weights.
I also have written a book called The Power of Pushups: Over 50 Types of Pushups for Strength and Endurance. It also describes many of the same pushups, but I have added many different variations to stress the upper body from many different positions. Again, the use of unstable surfaces is quite prevalent in this manual.
I have used these different pushups in my training with great results. In fact, I have maintained a 400 pound bench press without even lifting weights over the last year. I do a variety of different pushups along with other bodyweight exercises to maintain my strength, endurance, and flexibility.
This is one of the reasons that I put together this training program for motocross. I've been racing for over 30 years, and I'm in better shape now than my younger days after doing this type of training. If you are interested, you can check out the The Power of Pushups at http://www.motoxfitness.com/Power_of_Pushups.html.
Good Luck with your training,

I was overseas for a year, and since i wasn't able to ride, i worked out twice a day, i would swim for 30-40mins in the mornings 5 days a week, and would go to the gym in the evenings, in the Gym i would only do pushups, pullups, dips, situps and curls... I would do this for three cycles with no breaks inbetween and than go straight to a cross trainer or treadmill for 45mins. I thought that my cardio would be enough, but when i got back on the bike last month, i was tired and sore. I've realized that u cannot forsake ur "seat time", i've been trying to get in at least 3 days of riding and mixing in my swims, and gym routine. The muscle groups you use to ride are so much different than what u use in strength and endurance training, my final word is find a good mix of cardio, strength and riding during the week and see it pay off at the track.
stay safe and ride hard
