You'd be really happy with tha bike for a while.
For a while. I think he would be more happy in the long run with an 85cc.
Even if he doesn't want to race it. Ask any person that has bought a small trail bike. They hate it after a two months.
They are a waste of money if you ask me. If i would have done what the guy at the dealership told me, i would have wasted $1000 in "beginner bikes"
They told me to get a ttr125 when i first started. What did it do? I walked out side to the used bikes, said i'll take this one (2002rm125), learned to ride it well in less then a few weeks, and I saved $1000.
They are not hard to learn to ride on. No matter what people say about "power" anyone can learn to ride on any bike. An 85 isn't hard to learn on.
But if he does want a trail bike, at least get an crf150. You can have fun on it for a few months...
i would go with this instead...

what about a ttr-230
a little bigger, about the size of an 85...but a 4 stroke trail bike
a ttr-230 or crf-230 will be great

I would NEVER reccomend a tt-r 230. I have seen so many of those bikes with problems. Actually, let me rephrase: the 225's have problems, don't know about the 230's. I too would recomend a 2-stroke 85, any brand. If not, go with the CR-F 150 like everyone has said.

get a 125 4 stroke. i prefer the drz 125l that i just got. You would outgrow a 100 faster than a 125.

Ok, if this poor kid is getting bomb-barded with all these bikes, let's throw this one in the mix shall we. My Nephew is almost 11, he's 5' 6" tall and aprox 150lbs. (he's NOT fat, just really big, an inch shorter then me and 15 lbs heavier). He's been riding since he was 4 years old. He has been riding a 2002 ttr 125 since Christmas of 2002. His bro 13 has the same bike just the L model. Both boys are looking for a newer bike, one wants a thumper, the other a 2 smoker. What would you recommend? The 11 year older would really like to start racing, but he will be riding flat track and our "mini" MX track here on the farm, he rides really rough and the faster he can go, the better.
My personal opinion for you, being a beginner, test ride each of the bikes at your dealer. Only YOU will know what you can handle. Better to be safe then sorry... Most dealerships have test areas, so that would be the best thing for you right now. Good luck to ya!

I agree i had a crf150 about a year ago and i grew out of it and i always wanted more power so i now have a yz125 i think the crf 230 would be a good bike to start on it might be a little tall but you should grow into it
