Most of my stuff I order Direct through rider support. Some times I use mail order if its my cheapest option. Small things like spark plugs and tubes I get from my local dealer.
Vote on the one that you prefer and use the most.
Alot of people say that it helps the industry to buy from the local dealers. People say that you should just fork over the extra 10 bucks to help keep the smaller guys alive. But how can you fork out the extra money when the service is just tereble? A few weeks ago I went to the local Yamaha dealer looking for a clutch lever. The parts guy came back with a $25 O.E.M. lever, I asked if he had any cheaper after market stuff and he said they would need to order. Another time I went in for an oil filter and it took the guy 15 minutes to find the part # in the computer, then another 5 minutes to find it.
There is also a major lack of commnication in another local dealer, at the begining of the year, the owner told me that as a support rider for the shop, I was entitled a discount of 10% above dealer cost. The problem was that the owner and the head parts guy were the only ones that knew about this. One day when both were gone, another employee got an attidute with me when I asked why I wasn't getting my discount. He flipped out on me, that this was a place of buisness and they wouldn't turn a proffit if they gave everyone a discout all of the time. I told the owner about this and he didn't seem to care, so I took his stickers off my bike and never went back.

I get my gear, etc. from my support sponsors. It's rare if I buy something from a local dealer, although I'm not discouraging it by any means. When I first started racing, I chose which bike I was going to ride based mainly on what type of customer support I would get from the local dealer. For example, would he stock the basic parts allowing me to maintain my bike and not be sidelined because I was waiting on a brake lever. Or if I needed a special order, would he call another shop and see if he could get it sooner than if he had to order it from a warehouse and so on. These were all factors that determined where I purchased my bikes and gear from. I figured sometimes the cheapest wasn't always the best in the long run.

That's a bummer and I hope you mentioned to the owner that, because of the poor treatment, you didn't intend of returning. A smart business person will realize the mistake and potential loss of sales and rectify the situation. One unsatisfied customer can be magnified by 200% when you think of the negative impact their influence can have on current and potential customers.

Before I became a parts and accessories dealer myself, I got 95% of my stuff at my local dealer.
I bought the first of many bikes from them in 1983, and have been a loyal customer ever since. They always gave me a fair deal, and treated me well.
Find a GOOD dealer, and you'll never buy mail order again.

Most dealers around me are overpriced. Can't find a good deal around here at any of the shops exept the ktm one but they are still a bit higher than the internet. The only one who gave me a good deal was back in Colorado but the guy who gave me discounts quite and started a new shop before i left.
