Works Honda CR60R
The Works Honda CR60R they never made
Yes, the BBR boys have been up to no good again. This time they go back to the future – or is it future to the back or back in time? Think circa 1983 when Honda Works bikes were pieces of art that any and all motocrossers would drool over. This tribute is to the late, great Danny Chandler #34. The CR60R was only made for a short time and are almost collector’s items. In this case it was an old Jimmy Lewis relic that had been rotting along with the other hundred or so bikes he owns. He put this little gem into the hands of the BBR boys and let them do what they do – which is often magic. The bike was completely restored to look like a Works Honda from the early 80s — think Magoo riding an air-cooled two-stroke Works CR480R. BBR built a special sub-frame, two-piece Works-looking swingarm, built a Works-looking fork and crafted up a handbuilt cone exhaust. The bike is amazing looking – especially when you think about what they started with.
And don’t forget, this ride has a legacy and is fairly famous in a small circle of hardcore moto heads. Long before Racer X was a magazine, it was a small local newspaper. Many years ago, and I am talking many, Davey Coombs was in California and a group of people had a backyard BBQ at Mr. Lewis’ house. It also happened to be the same time there was a skate ramp also located in the backyard. One thing led to another and aboard this very same CR60R, the crazy began. Remember this was before Ronnie Renner (he was still probably sucking his thumb at the time) and freestyle, it had yet to be invented. We are talking mid 90s or so – I kind of forget. I was a fledgling photographer and I happened to snap some shots and landed my first cover of Racer X, long before my Dirt Rider Magazine days, Supermoto Racer Magazine, or now chump DR Editor that’s Large and motocross.com random poster. Well the rest is history and now the CR60R rides again—better, stronger, faster and WORKS.

An aluminum fuel tank was crafted complete with a cold air intake right through the middle of the tank.

A custom subframe was fabricated to look like the one-piece units that Honda crafted back in the era of real Works bikes

Attention to detail, BBR even created this trick little guard to keep a boot from snagging the rear brake lever.
