If you’ve never witnessed a speedway race in person, you are missing out. The sport has very deep roots all over the world and has been sliding its way in front of 50,000+ crowds in huge areas all over Western and Eastern Europe for 50 years. America has fielded some of the best racers in the world, but they often have to live abroad to showcase their talents. The sport is fast paced with loads of action and is starting to regain traction in the states. The Monster Energy Speedway Invitational is just part of the uprising and the first year was a success. American speedway is often on smaller tracks compared to European events so the Euro riders struggle a tad on our tracks and the US riders have to adapt to the faster and longer tracks in Europe.
The MESI was an awesome event that took place in front of a soldout crowd in the City of Industry racing facility in Southern California. Former two-time World Champion and actor Bruce Penhall was the grand marshal for the inaugural event. There were racers invited from all over the world, including two former American World Champions Greg Hancock and Billy Hamill.

The event format consisted of several heats with four riders per heat. Each rider competes against every rider in a series of heats to score points—3 for a win, 2 for second, and 1 for third. The top three riders with the most points transfer to the main event.

The main was a stacked all-American field with Hamill, Hancock, Ricky Wells, and Billy Janniro. In a matter of laps, that is how long the races are, Janniro edged out Hancock and Wells, and Hamill finished off the box in third.
