Freeride E: The evolution of revolution
KTM, the ‘Ready to Race’ sports motorcycle specialist goes to EICMA, World`s leading motorcycle fair in Milan with exciting new motorcycles for the model year 2012. True to its commitment to produce bikes designed for ultimate sporting pleasure, KTM is at EICMA with innovative new machines for all surfaces that encapsulate the work and dedication of the company’s R & D department and the collective passion of everyone at KTM’s headquarters in Austria.

Hubert Trunkenpolz, CSO, KTM-POWERSPORTS AG: “Our message for the future is clear. KTM focuses on any surface more than ever on the strength of our products. The innovations that we are showing here in Milan are a perfect reflection of our innovative, sporting and strong engagement.”

KTM has taken on the challenge of developing an electrically driven offroad sports motorcycle for mass production and has become the first of the major motorcycle companies to do so. This exciting, sports-oriented, environmentally friendly bike is the culmination of three intense years of hard work and a commitment to innovation. The Freeride E embodies all the collective KTM experience garnered during years of development of conventional combustion-driven models and has resulted in a motorcycle that is not only pure KTM but also globally unique. The electric motor, developed in-house, is the throbbing heart of this dynamic machine that is not only emission free but is also almost silent. The Freeride E is proof of KTM’s drive and determination to take on a highly complex project and successfully transform it into a bike that offers intense riding pleasure in the spirit of pure offroad sports. 2012 is only the beginning of what represents a challenging, but electrifyingly exciting new segment in tune with the demands of today’s society.

Actually Clint the Freeride battery recharges in 1.5 hours, and it’s hot swappable. So if you’re doing a whole day all you need is a spare battery and you can charge one while you ride and then swap.

Race day is going to be a fairly long day as it takes about 8 hours to charge these batteries.

I’ve been watching these things since they came out (Zero, Quantya, eKrad, etc..).
Some guy even converted a CRF250 into an electric bike that outperforms his CRf250X.
You’re right they’ll probably get their own class first but eventually they will replace IC engines not for the “green” reason but because they’ll out perform gas engines. This won’t be for a few years yet but the battery technology is advancing every year. If you have any doubts about electric engines vs. gas then go to youTube and search on “white zombie electric drag car” and watch some of those videos.
Inside of 10-15 years electric dirt bikes will be lighter and more powerful with much more torque than gas engines. Like it or not this is where things are headed.
I’ll enjoy my YZ250 as long as I can though.

It may one day have its own class to compete in, in time it may be a lot cheaper than combustion engine.

i cant ever see it getting a whole shot at Southwick, 450 pro

But, please what about the exhaust sound that every motocross fan loves.

Not sure!
