DNA Swap: Weston Peick and Rocket Rex Staten

They must be related or Rex Staten traveled to the future from the ’70s.

I was at the Lake Elsinore National at the starting line of the last 450 race of the year. As I scanned the starting line I had a Timothy Leary flashback from my very early years. For a split second I thought I was five years old again watching a race at Saddleback Park in the early ’70s and I just passed by “Rocket” Rex Staten on the starting line. I blinked twice to realize I was back at Elsinore and in front of me was none other than Weston Peick. Is it me or are these the same guy just 40 years apart? Are these two related in some bizarre twist of fate? I asked Weston if he was channeling his inner Rex Staten and he said, “WHO?” His father laughed as I was still shaking off the effects of the hallucinogens that must have been seeping up from the wet fermenting woodchips that were dug into the ground. —Scott Hoffman
