Arguably one of the most important aspects of a race is the start. A good start can make your race much easier, and a bad start can make you work even harder for a good finish. In this Honda Riding tip, we’re going to take a close look at starting on a concrete pad and all the necessary prep to get your start position ready for action.

In our local series it is against the rules to touch the dirt in front of the gate. I've also found that angling the bike ever so slightly to the inside helps too. And most 450 racers I know (myself included) start in second gear on dirt and on concrete.

Yeah, some race series don't allow you to touch the dirt in front of the gate, but some do, so I figured I'd mention it. I was on a 250f in the video, so for me 1st is the best gear. Also, I think sometimes for beginners--which is who these tips are aimed at--first is probably the best bet anyways. Glad you guys enjoy the videos! -Lutes

I didn't hear you mention anything about how important a holeshot device is I think the manufacturers would be happy too! Aren't they slidin you a lil doe bro????? u rock B.L.!!!!

On concrete the holeshot devices actually don't help at all. They work well for dirt, because the keep you from wheeling, but on concrete you already get some wheel spin, so you don't wheelie as much. I wish I did get some "doe" from the various companies that we test product from on this site, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Thanks for watching the vids! -Lutes
