We’ve been testing quite a few pipes for various 250cc four-strokes these last few weeks; all with their different characteristics and all with their own promised engine improvements. Recently, we took delivery of Dubach Racing Development’s full titanium exhaust system for the 2008 Yamaha YZ250F, which like many other systems on the market, promises to improve the power of the little blue bike.
Just in case you weren’t aware, DR. D is owned and operated by 15-time Vet World Champion, former factory racer, and San Jose Supercross winner, Doug Dubach. Over the years, Dubach has become known as the Yamaha specialist; however, his growing company does offer exhaust packages for every kind of motocross bike on the market. It was Dubach’s experience with Yamaha’s, though, that made us wonder if the DR. D system could give the YZ250F the little added boost that we’ve been looking for.
Made completely from grade two aerospace titanium with a magnesium end cap, the DR. D exhaust system weighs in at a mere four pounds 11 ounces—one of the lightest set ups available on the market. Behind the end cap—just like most mufflers on the market today—is a removable spark arrestor cone, while a machined aluminum hanger holds the can securely in place. The muffler also features easily removable bolts at the base for quick repacking and simple maintenance.
Our biggest gripe about the motor on the ’08 YZ250F is the lack of low end, and we were hoping that the Dr. D system would improve this and then some. As it turned out, the low-end power was improved, with the mid receiving nearly as much as, while the top-end complimented this with improved over-rev. We didn’t, however, see a drastic improvement down low, and in fact, at times still had to ride the bike largely in the upper echelons of the powerband, just like the stock bike. Nonetheless, though, there was an improvement to the power delivery, which is exactly what we wanted. As for durability, this pipe is second to none. Despite the lightweight materials used, it held up really well, and over the course of our time testing, we never had any problems with something breaking.
RATING:
Overall, we came away pleased with the DR. D system. Dubach’s experience with building a quality product shows, as the power improvement, craftsmanship, and quality put this system at the top of our list of ones you should consider for your steed. If the price tag is a little high, though—and most high-end systems on the market are these days—DR. D also offers cheaper versions of the same system made out of aluminum and stainless steel. Go check it out at your local dealer, like we said, you probably won’t be disappointed.
