MILLVILLE, Minn. (August 12, 2007) – Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., capped off an illustrious 11-year career with a record 150th career win at the Honda Spring Creek Pro National Presented by Unbound Energy and Scott USA, Round 9 of AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF. Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., picked up his third win of the season in AMA Motocross Lites at Spring Creek Motocross Park.
Carmichael, who retired today from two-wheel racing to focus solely on his four-wheel career, was completely dominant in his final ride, sweeping both motos en route to the overall victory to keep a perfect six-for-six record in races he has entered on the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship. He also ends his career with a record 15 AMA National Championships.
To put Carmichael’s career win record into perspective, the next rider on the career win list is Jeremy McGrath, of Encinitas, Calif., who had 89 victories.
“This is a sport that has made me and provided me a great life and lifestyle,” said Carmichael. “I’ve surrounded myself with great sponsors and people that look out for me. It’s funny to think that 1996 was my first national and its weird to think that this ride is over. Its time to move on and I’m happy with every decision I’ve made.”
Yamaha’s Grant Langston, of Clemont, Fla., finished second with a 2-2 moto finish while KTM’s Mike Alessi, Victorville, Calif., was third with a 4-3.
With Carmichael now out of the championship picture, the focus turns to the points battle being waged between Honda’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, and Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry, of Largo, Fla., who exit Millville tied for the point’s lead with 311 points apiece. Grant Langston, who entered the race with a 27-point deficit, moved into the third position and now trails by 11 points. Short and Ferry finished fourth and sixth overall, respectively.
Villopoto finished 2-1 in the motos to keep pace with Kawasaki teammate Ben Townley, of Tallahassee, Fla., who posted a 1-2 moto finish. Only two points separate the two riders in the AMA Motocross Lites standings with three races remaining on the season. Kawasaki’s Brett Metcalfe, of Murrieta, Calif., was third overall with a 3-3.
The AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF will break for one week before heading to Delmont, Pa., for the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Steel City National on August 25-26.
