At first glance, this year’s AXO gear doesn’t appear to have much in the way of interesting designs; however, upon closer inspection, the gear actually has numerous features that make it a really cool set of gear.
We tested the AXO Phoenix pants, which feature an exclusive slip-fit knee and a unique TPR logo over the top of the knee. The slip-fit knee helps to increase ventilation, as well as room for knee braces. The pants also have a rear yoke that moves with the rider to keep the pants in place no matter what. To help with durability, full-length leather panels can be found on both knees to protect from the hot pipe and offer improved grip on the sides of the bike. As for the Team Issue jersey, it is made completely from polyester with vented portions on it to help during hot days. It also has what AXO refers to as an endless collar, which improves comfort, as it has no areas that will rub while pounding out motos. Another key feature on the jersey is the silicone dots found on the back, which help to keep it tucked in. To complement the jersey and pants, we also tested the Padlock gloves. The gloves offer plenty of protection, as padding covers everything from the palm of the hands to the knuckles. The Padlock gloves also have a Velcro cuff to keep the dirt out.
When we first slipped on the Phoenix pants, they seemed slightly baggy, but once we got completely geared up and were riding, they felt completely comfortable. The slip-fit knees work really well, and helps immensely at improving the airflow during a long hot moto. The only thing we didn’t like about the pants was the buckle on the front. We prefer the ratchet versions rather than buttons and Velcro. The jersey is also really comfortable, and stayed tucked in thanks to the silicone strips on the backside. As for the gloves, at first we were a little skeptical since we aren’t normally huge fans of lots of padding in the palms, however, once we rode in them, we never had any problems. Nevertheless, we would still prefer a very minimalist glove over one with an ample amount of padding.
RATING
Overall, this complete set of AXO gear is one exceptional choice. We like the simple looks, the fit, ventilation, and the durability of the set. While there were a few things that we would probably change, that’s normally the case with anything, and despite those few things, we would recommend this gear set to anyone.
